Turning a Thrifted Fan into a Statement Piece
There’s something especially rewarding about creating a piece that not only fills a space, but defines it. For this project, I set out to make a large-scale artwork for our living room—something bold, layered, and full of personality.
The starting point was unexpected: a four-foot fan I found while thrifting. Its size and structure immediately stood out to me as an opportunity rather than an object, and I decided to reimagine it as a canvas. Projects like this are always my favorite—taking something overlooked and giving it a completely new purpose.
After preparing and priming the surface, I sketched out a composition that would feel both classic and expressive. The final design features a floral arrangement in a vase, set on a table with a striped tablecloth. The combination of organic shapes and structured pattern creates a balance of movement and contrast, while the scale of the piece allows it to function as a true focal point in the room.
From a process standpoint, this project was about more than just painting—it was about problem-solving. Working on a nontraditional surface required adjustments in both technique and materials, from ensuring proper adhesion to thinking through how the piece would ultimately be mounted and displayed.
What I appreciate most about this piece is how it reflects my approach to design: resourceful, intentional, and a little unconventional. It’s a reminder that goo design doesn’t always start with the “right” materials—it starts with a vison and a willingness to experiment.
This piece highlights key elements of DIY home decor and upcycled design, including material reuse, large-scale composition, and approachable painting techniques. Working on a nontraditional surface required thoughtfulness—particularly in adapting materials, ensuring durability, and planning for secure wall mounting.
The result is a bold, one-of-a-kind artwork that functions as a focal point within the space while reflecting a resourceful and creative design approach. Projects like this demonstrate how everyday or discarded items can be repurposed into meaningful, high-impact decor.
